An acid hydrometer is used to determine the state of charge of the battery based on the specific gravity of the electrolyte, which consists of diluted sulfuric acid. This specific gravity depends on the state of charge.

During discharge, the electrolyte reacts with the active material in the plates, causing the sulfuric acid content in the electrolyte to decrease. A fully charged battery has a specific gravity of 1.265 to 1.280; when fully discharged, it will be only 1.120. Note: specific gravity depends on temperature. For every 7°C deviation from 20°C, the measured specific gravity is 0.5 points lower (at 27°C) or higher (at 13°C).
